Fix a Sticking Door That Won’t Latch

Do you have a door that is sticking or maybe it won’t latch correctly?  Is it starting to affect the security of your home because the deadbolt won’t go into its full position without excessive force being applied?

If you answered yes to any of the questions above, I have a solution for you.  The fix may not be as complicated as it seems.  To understand the situation better, let’s address the two most common problems:

  1. The hinges may not have been properly installed with long screws, and the weight of the door, overtime, has caused the door to sag.
  2. The foundation has shifted causing the doorframe to come out of square.

Now that you know the two most common problems, let’s visit the three common solutions on how to fix it:

  1.  The easiest fix is to take the center screw out of the top hinge of the door.  This screw should be at least 2-3 inches long.  Why?  It needs to connect the doorframe to the framing of the house to prevent the door from sagging. What if the center screw is less than 2 inches long?
    • Loosen all the screws on the top hinge.  Then put a 3-inch screw into the center hole while simultaneously pulling up on the door.  Lastly, tighten the other screws you loosened.
  2. What if number 1 didn’t completely fix it?
    • Loosen the screws on the very bottom hinge and place a small piece of shim behind it.  Then tighten the screws back up.
  3. What if number 1 or 2 didn’t completely fix it?
    • The strike plates on the doorframe can be re-routed out and shifted up or down OR the whole door frame may have to be replaced or readjusted
